From Lamu in the north to Vanga in the south, fishing is not just an economic activity but a way of life deeply embedded in the region’s cultural fabric. However, fishers in this region face significant safety challenges that threaten their lives, livelihoods, and the industry's sustainability. Addressing these issues requires a multifaceted approach involving government intervention, community initiatives, like-minded stakeholders, and modern technology.
Stella-Maris and the International Fund for Fishers' Safety have taken a holistic approach to training fishers on safety and first aid procedures. Since January 2025, the project has been implemented in Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, Lamu, Tana River, Nakuru, Kisumu, and Homa-Bay. Over 25,000 fishers across the Country have been trained in these lifesaving skills.
